What is $EN?

The American Angus Association’s definition of $EN (cow energy value) is “expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars save on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.”

Indreland Angus $EN

According to the Fall 2023 Sire Evaluation Report, the average for $EN in the Angus breed for non-parent bulls is -14. Our average $EN for our registered sale bulls is +22. With the rising cost of feed, we think the $EN number should really be evaluated, and in our opinion is the first step to low input production.
